Home Cooking
Cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the U.S. It’s also the leading cause of injuries.
Did you know eighty-two percent of all fire deaths occur in the home?
The Holiday Season
The Holidays are a time for family and reflection, and a time of joy. Make sure your Holiday Season is happy and safe.
Safety Tips
Consider the following do’s and don’t's:
- Inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in insulation, broken or cracked sockets and excessive kinking or wear. Replace if needed.
- Use only UL-approved lighting
- Don’t overload outlets or electrical circuits.
- Avoid using lit candles. If you use them, make sure they have a stable base and place them where they cannot be knocked over.
- Never leave the house with candles burning.
- Never leave cooking unattended. A fire can start in just seconds.
- Clean cooking surfaces regularly to prevent grease buildup which can ignite.
- If a fire breaks out while cooking, put a lid on the pan to smother it.
- Never throw water on a grease fire.
- Keep towels and pot holders away from heating elements.
- Double-check the kitchen. Make sure all small appliances are turned off, and be sure all candles are out before you go to bed or leave the house.
- Don’t burn your Christmas wrapping paper in the wood stove or fire place.
