Wood-Burning in the Home
Fireplace or Wood Stove
A dirty chimney or stove pipe can cause extreme chimney, stove pipe, and home damage.
Before You Burn
You should have your chimney and stove pipe cleaned and inspected in the fall or before the burning season.
During the Season
Observe the following:
- Keep your fire hot to help it burn cleaner.
- Keep your fire box cleaned out to increase stove efficiency.
- Don't put ash in a container that will burn when cleaning the firebox.
- When removing ash, move it away from the home or any structure that will burn. Hot ash causes structure fires!
- Keep a minimum 2-A-10-B-C fire extinguisher in the home.
- Keep working smoke detectors in the home.
- Change smoke detector batteries twice a year.
Do-It-Yourself or Hire a Pro
Chimney-cleaning equipment kits can be purchased at local hardware or home improvement centers.
Commercial chimney sweeps are listed in the phone directory under "Chimney Cleaning".
