In North Central Washington, fires are a natural part of the changing landscape. Fire season is becoming an annual occurrence in our region. Since 1970, over 200 fires of record have occurred within the Leavenworth area. The Eagle and Chiwaukum Complex Fires in 2014 burned a combined total of 15,677 acres. In 2015 the Chelan Complex, Wolverine, First Creek, Black Canyon and Sleepy Hollow fires burned a total of 171,698 acres; and in 2018 the Cougar Creek Fire burned an additional 42,217 acres. Wildfires have destroyed over 100 structures in Chelan County over the past decade.
